Who are you?!
Supersuckers Over the course of the last 10 years, the Supersuckers have established themselves as one of the most hard working and likeable bands in rock, releasing The Smoke of Hell in 1992 and La Mano Cornuda in 1994. In 1995 guitarist Ron Heathman left and the band recruited Rick Sims, formerly of Didjits fame. They recorded Sacrilicious Sounds of the Supersuckers. In 1996 Ron Heathman returned to the band and they cut the acclaimed country record Must've Been High in 1997. In 1999 the Supersuckers cut what is largely considered to be their best recorded moment to date, The Evil Powers of Rock 'N' Roll. But that was three years ago. Where the hell is the new record? gave a call to frontman Eddie Spaghetti to find out the latest about their new live country record, Must've Been Live coming out in March.

Recoil: The new label - you guys have launched your own label: MID-FI?
Eddie Spaghetti:
We have; MID-FI, straight out of Middlefingerton.

R: OK. (Pause) What is that about?
ES:
It's just a sort of fictional city where we all like to live in our minds - Middlefingerton, USA. A little play on words and then plus it's nice because it's a great name for a record label. Especially for us because you know we're not hi-fi, we're not low-fi, we're kind of mid-fi.

R: Are you guys doing it as a vehicle to put out your records or are you going to do other bands?
ES:
So far it's just for us. We're going to try to work out all the bugs and make all the mistakes on ourselves so that eventually when we make some promises to other bands we can actually keep them.

R: Are you guys going to put vinyl out or just CDs?
ES:
Yeah, there'll be vinyl. The vinyl for Must've Been Live is totally kick ass awesome-looking - it's going to be a triple-sided record, a double-record with only three sides.

R: What's going on with Aces and Eights?
ES:
Still going strong; it's more of a project-oriented label and it's run more by my friends Danny and Scott. I'm just like a, I guess I would be considered a consultant on a project-by-projectSupersuckers band picture basis. Like I helped out with the West Memphis Three benefit, but they've done some things with some heavy metal bands that I don't know much about and I can't offer any opinions because, you know, if I think it sucks, I just think it sucks. But they're doing great and they're fantastic people and they're going to do some great stuff.

R: What made you guys decide to put out a live country record?
ES:
Kind of just happenstance really. Our soundman had been recording our country shows because you can get a really good sounding recording with the country stuff a lot easier than you can with the rock stuff; because when we do the rock show it's just so loud and so bombastic it's hard to just get a good room recording. So Dave Fisher was recording our country shows and getting really good recordings and we kind of forgot about them for a while. Then one day he was looking through a box and found them again and said, 'Hey, Eddie, you should listen to these,' and we listened to a few and we actually found something that you know, no real label would want to put out: this live country record. But we thought that the fans have, after a couple years, totally embraced our country side - our little alter ego - but they needed something and this is a great thing to give them.

R: "Good Livin'" - I've heard that before. Where have I heard that?
ES:
Well, we did a record as the Junkyard Dogs probably around ninety-two or ninety-three and it was a song that we wrote for that record and we had been playing it live at the country show, so you must have heard the Junkyard Dogs record which is a hard thing to do because that's a hard to find record. A great record too.

R: You guys are going to do a full country tour for this?
ES:
We are. We're going to dust off the acoustic guitars and the fiddles and the banjo and the pedal steels and get out there and give it to you, Supersuckers style.

R: I have a question regarding merchandise: are you guys going to put out a baseball jersey?
ES:
We had one when we first started and then they became kind of trendy and we stopped, but I like them. The thing that I don't like about the companies that make them now is that they're not cool like the old ones were. The old ones were sort of thin and at the bottom they tapered in the middle and now the new ones are like a regular T-shirt at the bottom with the baseball style sleeves. We've been trying to find really cool seventies-style jerseys and they're really hard to find.

R: Yeah there is a market for them. I was on Ebay looking for an old Van Halen jersey and I saw this nineteen seventy-nine tour jersey go for two hundred dollars.
ES:
Oh, that's awesome, man. Van Halen was the shit; they were my band in high school.

R: If there's something out there that rocks harder than that first record, I'd like to hear it.
ES:
Me too.

R: What about a new rock record for you guys?
ES:
Totally in the works; we're going to have something out hopefully by, I'm going to say fall at the risk of disappointing somebody, but I think that we'll be able to do it by then.

R: Do you think you guys will be able to top the Evil Powers record?
ES:
That's the goal man, I think that Evil Powers raised the bar once again for us but I think that [the new rock album] will be along the lines of Evil Powers. I think that we will do the same exact recording process that we did with Evil Powers because we're all very happy with and proud of that record.

Editor's note: This interview was conducted two weeks before guitarist Ron Heathman and his wife had a baby daughter. Unfortunately the little girl was born with a rare heart condition. As a result Heathman has again taken a temporary leave of absence from the band to see his daughter through to complete health.
