The project: ex-members of Detroit bands like Big Chief and Forehead Stew unite to form a self-indulgent side-project. The goal: use the band as an outlet for the music each member couldn't play elsewhere. The result: Hard Starward, an understandably varied disc that combines elements of spacey psychedelia and gritty guitar rock - a kind of Smashing Kyuss or Stabbing Pumpkins, if you will. Variac sporadically musters some emotive performances, but the majority of their relatively basic crescendos are less than dramatic, and the entire disc can go by without the listener ever really noticing it was playing.
