Rage Against the Machine
Renegades
Sony
Rating: 4.5 Flaming Goat Heads
Renegades is the perfect title for this next-to-last Rage album - 12 tunes (14 if you count two bonus live tracks on the limited edition first pressing) covering the work of artists who were musical renegades. Rage pays in full their respect to some of the artists who inspired Rage's innovative direction: MC5, Bob Dylan, Devo, The Stooges and many more less known but important acts. The opening track, Eric B and Rakim's "Microphone Fiend," sets an intense benchmark that is amazingly maintained throughout the disc with deep grooves that are up to the task of encompassing Zach de la Rocha's furious, syncopated vocal leaps. Guitarist Tom Morello delivers yet another load of unique and innovative methods of getting his guitar to sound like anything from a ray gun to a malfunctioning coffee bean grinder. Rage's members openly admit not every member has even heard the original versions of every song - an ignorance which helps in producing new twists on the originals. Powerful, uncompromising and fearless, Renegades will remind the music industry of the magnitude of the loss of Rage.-Cliff Frantz
