The Paper Chase
Young Bodies Heal Quickly, You Know
Beatville Records
Rating: 1.5 Flaming Goat Heads
Although the "This may be the last album you ever buy" insert boast is true in the Buddhist/"Your next breath may be your last" sense of the phrase, it does not mean this album is the be-all-end-all of recorded music. Far from it. Members of The Paper Chase probably pride themselves on their music's complexity, but their collective parts usually add up to unpleasantness, especially when singer Congleton pipes up - his voice is an extremely acquired taste at best. The guitar work sounds like an extreme version of Frank Zappa, which would be great if it wasn't completely ignorant to what the other instruments are doing. The only exception is "Can I Pour You Another Drink, Lover," which is musically interesting, coherent, and appealing - except for that goddamned singer ruining everything with his Half Japanese-ish crooning. Don't let the packaging quality trick you - the listen will be a disappointment.-Cliff Frantz
