Depeche Mode
Exciter

Rating: 3 Flaming Goat Heads
After his brush with near-death, lead man Dave Gahan had a lot to say on Depeche Mode's successful album Ultra. Sadly, it appears that Gahan doesn't have much more to say. Depeche Mode's latest release, Exciter, lacks the attention-grabbing songs for which the band's previous albums were known. The songs aren't bad, but there isn't any one track more attention-grabbing than another. The opening track, "Dream On," easily the album's most solid potential hit, sets a great opening tone for the album that unfortunately no other track seems to be able to keep going as the songs, although musically interesting ("The Sweetest Condition" is a good listen), don't seem to detract from one another in a manner that makes any one single song, or even a verse, stick out from one another. Yet, even in all of this pessimism, it is hard to steer anyone away from buying this album; many Depeche Mode fans may find Exciter more appealing, and it is still a must have for diehard fans of the band.
