Who are you?!
Bjork
Vespertine
Elektra
This world seems a long way from our planet. Bjork has always seemed to be a bit of an alien; no other Earth-being could possess such a voice, and few artists are able to pursue such an individualist approach to their medium. Bjork has described Vespertine as "about being on your own in your own house with your laptop and whispering for a year and writing a very peaceful song that tiptoes." Translation: this record is about quiet introspection and human hibernation, about everyday noises that play as music. Though not quite an artistic leap as her critically acclaimed Homogenic, nor as radio friendly as her first two releases, this album is more beautiful than anything she’s done to date. With beats supplied by IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) digi-stud duo Matmos, Vespertine blips, snaps and crackles with an eerie restraint; the space created gives her wonderful voice plenty of room to swirl and shout. While some of the tracks eventually manage to climb past snail pace - the churning opener ("Hidden Place") - the best stuff is, appropriately enough, tucked away. "Aurora" begins rather strangely before dipping into a seriously gorgeous vocal chorus, and "It’s Not Up To You" wiggles around at first before settling into what becomes the most engaging track on the album. For those who listen to music as a way of completely escaping the norm, to those who simply enjoy a good singer, this record is highly recommended.-Andrew Watson
