Alice In Chains
Live
Columbia
Rating: 4 Flaming Goat Heads

Although at least 50 Alice In Chains bootleg CDs are readily available at heavily inflated prices, Live represents AIC's first legitimate live electric offering, featuring recorded performances from their first national tour in 1990 to their last shows with KISS in 1996. Opening with "Bleed the Freak" (recorded in Seattle in 1990), Layne and the boys sound energetic, hungry and confident - like they already knew the berth of the musical lane they were paving. The post-needle (or during, maybe) recordings, however, expose some of the sloppy live playing that many AIC fans remember allowing; Staley's vocal control is a little shaky on 1996's recordings of "Again" and "Them Bones;" and 1993's recording of "Angry Chair" features some obviously off-time drum work by Sean Kinney (whose known tempo problems are not evident on Live). Alone, the presence of the less known tunes "A Little Bitter," and "Queen of the Rodeo" make this disc worth the purchase. And if you like "Love, Hate, Love" from Facelift, this album is a must have - the live version kicks.
