Confusion. Nothing quite spells confusion like electronic musicians from France spouting passionate robotic soliloquies in English. Throw in an unfortunate Beck cameo and a strange blowjob fixation and you've got the new Air record. Experimenting with strange and alluring interpolations like warm/cold and man/machine allows for a bit more focus to be placed on lyrics, an element that has heretofore been secondary for Air, known for their mostly instrumentally lush atmospheric electro-jazz. "How Does It Make You Feel" gives the traditional love letter ballad a bizarre twist as a monotonous vocoder delivers lines like "You are the most beautiful entity I have ever seen/I will protect you in your dreams/Be your angel." It makes the listener think a little about robots and their capacity for emotional expression. It's an oddly touching piece, funny at first. One of the most impressive tracks is "Sex Born Poison," a spacey jam that features a gorgeous Japanese/English vocal, quietly tenuous strings and a crunchy keyboard based outro. And it's about receiving oral pleasure. Matter of fact, at least three songs on this record seem to be about receiving oral pleasure. One that doesn't, however, is "Radio #1," which by all accounts should be the first single. It's the only thoroughly up-tempo piece on the record, featuring a great live drum track and a mysterious vocalist who shows up on the last chorus. It's like they found Morissey standing in the middle of the street with a "Will Sing For Food" sign around his neck.
